An insatiable appetite for expression in colors has always been there in Bonny’s genetic code. Growing up in India, he was enchanted by the irradiated world of traditional art, particularly that of European and .American masters’ oil paintings and water colors.

He loves to travel and explore new locations and subjects. It has become his passion to capture the mood of the scene in lights and shade, using subtle color schemes. He is one of a small group of artists in the United Arab Emirates working en plein air but he is equally comfortable painting in the studio.

Bonny has been drawn to drawing and painting right from his childhood. Over the years he became a self-taught artist in both water color and oil paintings. His inspiration in art derives from many things, be it a cast shadow on a sunny morning, waves on the ocean, clouds, people, or still life. He constantly finds opportunities to make figurative sketches and caricature. Works of world masters in oil and water color have had a great influence on his philosophy of perceiving subjects and transferring them to paper and canvas. He loves to work en plein air whenever weather permits.

Bonny Mathew has been an active member of the Dubai International; Art Center since 2013 and began teaching Watercolors for beginners, intermediate and advanced students in 2018. He is an experienced professional with high level of expertise as an artist and as a teacher.  He has been successful in communicating techniques and ideas effectively to students of varied ethnicity in the region. His teaching abilities have garnered him high regard in the art center.

He has participated in many of the centre’s exhibitions and won awards for his watercolor artworks, including First Place in the International Watercolor Society Festival in 2018. He successfully sells his artwork both locally and internationally.

Throughout this workshop artists will work along with Bonny both en plein air and in the studio.

What the Dubai International Art Center  and others have said about Bonny:

“We are certain Bonny Mathew will make an excellent teacher at any institution due to his patient, generous nature and his ability to relate to people of various ages, nationalities and cultures.”

-Sahira Banu, Centre Manager

“He is very personable and mild mannered. It was if we had know each other for years. He has a great personality and communicating with others, no matter where they are from or there walk of life, is natural for him.

It is apparent through his work how passionate he is about what he does.  He renders the details to his surroundings in all his art into a very life like visual and  does it effortlessly.”
                                              – Angela M.

“I first met Bonny when I came across him painting “en plein air” at a local fishing harbor here in Dubai. It was fascinating for me to see artists working outside of a studio and see him produce a painting in the fresh air. He is a very relaxed and confident artist without any arrogance who takes his practice very seriously.

I then started to follow his practice and subsequently bought one of his paintings: an oil painting of a landscape of the Hajjar Mountains which I very much treasure.
It is very rare here to find an artist who produces art for the sake of his own practice (and not simply for commercial gain or for self promotion/expression).
He has excellent communication skills and a fantastic, generous character. He is friendly and kind-natured. And he is very modest about his talent.
Bonny is comfortable working in different locations: he works independently taking himself off to remote locations in the desert and mountains in often difficult conditions. I know he also works well with other people and is a well-respected member of a local art centre here.
I have worked in the arts as a strategic consultant for 10 years, I have a small collection but my painting from Bonny is my most treasured. He is very particular about his use of light (this can be something very challenging here as we have extremely bright sunlight) and he captures the essence of our harsh but beautiful desert landscape which is important for me.”
