Christina Wald: A Sketching Obsession in Tuscany

We are delighted to welcome Christina to the Dream Team for her first-ever workshop with Lisa’s Gryphon, May 7-16, 2025. It’s not too early to reserve your spot in what is shaping up to be a fabulous 10 days with this artist-extraordinaire.

Christina has been an artist-illustrator for over 3 decades and has over 60 illustrated children’s books to her credit. In addition, she has taught illustration and sequential story telling at the Northern Kentucky University for over 10 years. But that’s not all. She is a passionate sketcher and started the Cincinnati Chapter of the international organization, Urban Sketchers (founded by Gabi Campanario in Seattle, WA), where she is now the Social Media Director, in addition to all her other activities.

In May of 2023, her latest book, Sketching, Here & Everywhere…my Obsession, was released, which includes exercises that she uses with her many students. Grab your copy here and bring it with you for a personalized autograph from Christina.

She is a world traveler as a result of her sketching passion and involvement with Urban Sketchers, having been invited to the Auckland Symposium previously. This year (2024) she will be speaking and inspiring sketchers in Buenos Aires, as well as leading a group in Romania for the second time.

You can see by her photos, this artist knows her stuff! And she will be sharing that wealth of knowledge and technical expertise with you…all in the beautiful surrounds of Tuscany, Italy!

Here we keep the groups small (maximum 12) to allow for the most time and attention per student. Christina will do demos, and offer direction and suggestions to allow you to create sketches of the iconic structures and sites we will be visiting. You will learn to sketch the important elements of the scene, utilizing your time wisely and with a consciousness of the ever-changing light. In short, you will become a fearless sketcher, with a sketchbook filled with Italian memories!!!!

Your materials will be spare. No need to haul a gigantic, ungainly pochade box around. She will show you tips and recipes for creating gorgeous colors with only a minimum palette. The goal is to sketch with intention, but also a bit of abandon…and Christina will show you how to do that.
